Alexander String Quartet in Concert at SRJC
Alexander String Quartet performs on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 8pm. What an exciting time to have this foursome back with us! The quartet commissioned a piece by Cindy Cox to celebrate their 30 years of great music. The piece, "Patagon" will have its world premiere at the April Concert. It should be a spectacular event. Welcoming back to campus violinists Zakarias Grafilo and Frederick Lifsitz; violist Paul Yarbrough and cellist Sandy Wilson, is always special, but a world premiere piece certainly makes this a concert you won't want to miss. They will also perform works of Beethoven and Shostakovich. The Quartet has performed in music capitals of five continents. Besides the masterworks, this marvelous ensemble has also established itself as a strong advocate for new music, having commissioned 25 pieces in its 30 year history. The lineup of whom they have played with and where is a virtual Who's Who of music. Lincoln Center, 92nd Street Y, Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Museum with the likes of Branford Marsalis, Joyce Yang, and a host of other top notch music artists is but a small sampling. On the horizon for the Quartet is a new work commissioned from Jake Heggie. The work was commissioned by San Francisco Performances. Formed in 1981, the 30 year history of this enterprising Quartet has landed them numerous award, prizes and plaudits.
