I Am Sindhutai Sapkal (Mee Sindhutai Sapkal)
Followed by a panel discussion
Deeply moving and with a great Marathi cast, Anant Mahadevan's film echoes with a universal, strongly humanistic theme, invoking a movie like The Color Purple. Based on a true story, this film is about a village woman's journey to overcome terrible odds and become a saint-like savior of many. Sindhutai grows up in a poor family in 1950s rural Maharastra, where women have few rights. Although she is keen to get an education, her mother forces the 12-year-old to get married to a 30-year-old man. Spending the rest of her youth at her in-laws, she is constantly berated and beaten when she tries to read. Inspired by her visiting father, however, she develops her own mind. At the age of 23, and pregnant with her third child, she has more confidence and speaks out for the rights of women workers but is cast out of her home after false claims that she has been unfaithful. Abandoned by all, humiliated and starving, she finds herself with a newborn, scavenging graveyard offerings. Yet by pure determination, she turns her life around and ends up adopting many abandoned children, becoming known as "Maa". London Film Festival
