Ser: L.A. vs. B.A.
Emerging solo artist Karen Anzoategui tailors her show to perfection for the live taping with her show
"Ser: L.A. vs. B.A." November 16th, 2011 at 8:P.M.  Anzoategui has performed in the Hollywood Fringe and the New Latino Works Festival at Highways in 2011 to sold out audiences and to standing ovation crowds.  With this experience, Karen is no ready to showcase her show like never before:  a live taping, in the middle of West Hollywood at Macha Theatre.  Karen stands out with her unique story and performance chops that caught the attention of Reg E. Gaines  (book and lyrics, Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk) who served as her dramaturge for the Hollywood Fringe Festival, after he saw Karen's work he immediately wanted to work with her.

Caught in the middle of her parents' tumultuous match they call marriage, as a
kid Karen is kicked back and forth between L.A. and Buenos Aires. In adulthood
she has to choose between the soccer mecca burning in her heart, home of her
personal saint Maradona and L.A., the immigrant dreamland of peace and plenty.
After spending her early years in LA, Buenos Aires is Karen's soccer paradise
and is winning hands down until she gets a reality check as she crosses paths
with the aftermath of its dirty war and then a devastating economic crisis.
What now? Even Maradona seems to be fading.

In the middle of it all she fights her way out of dresses and into soccer gear,
and faces yet another question: Who will be the object of her affection, the
boys on the field or the girls in the stands? A very unique Queer story that all LGBTQ communities can relate to!

Directed by Che'Rae Adams (Tender, Walkin Thru the Fire), Voiceovers by Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) Ser: L.A. vs. B.A. is a theatrical delight of Anzoategui's personal story seamlessly woven through major moments in
Argentina's history: the 1986 World Cup, the mothers in white head scarves
demonstrating at La Plaza de Mayo--demanding to know the fate of their children
that the government disappeared during the dirty war-- and the 2001 economic
collapse. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wutqKpjie8&feature=related
Anzoategui's show is a seamless delight of her personal story woven through Argentina's history of crises, using clever theatrical strategies such as casting James Brown in the role of her abusive father (off-the-charts-funny!).
Soccer fanaticism, sexual identity, political repression and economic collapse. "Ser" is a unique story of the dilemmas of a transnational Latino experience that doesn't get more real and more fun than this. Don't miss the 6,000 mile match.

Karen has performed in a variety of acclaimed plays such as Ruby Tragically Rotund at the LATC and Sissy at CoA. She has been developing Ser through workshops at Redcat, Teada Productions, Casa 0101 and CoA.
After experiencing the power of her performance when she participated in a
workshop he led in L.A. in February 2011, Reg E. Gaines offered to dramaturge
Anzoategui's Hollywood Fringe version.
"Love Karen's enthusiasm and energy! Coupled with a unique ability to set proper words against "improper" words allowing true musicality of poetry to pour from her soul. Karen is a writer who just so happens to perform what she writes. Her "play" might be a revelation and change the way we look at solo theater." reg e gaines
