Northwest Agriculture Business Center Presents TO MARKET! TO MARKET! Selling Locally Produced Food in Today's Competitive Market Place Skagit Transit Station Community Room 105 East Kincaid Street, Mt Vernon, WA 98273
The market for local food in the Puget Sound region is stronger than ever, expanding opportunities for small and mid-scale producers in both urban and rural settings. Increasingly however, these producers, consumers, and others who care about local food are realizing that farmers markets, CSAs, and relationships with restaurants are not enough to create a stable and sustainable regional food system. In fact, A 2006 study found that the lack of efficient small-scale processing and distribution systems attuned to the needs of the producers and consumers in the Puget Sound Region are preventing an increase in local production for local consumption. The Puget Sound Food Network is excited to offer a new workshop called "To Market! To Market!" targeted to farmers and food entrepreneurs looking to get the most from cutting edge practices to stay competitive in today's complex marketplace. In this workshop, we will introduce food producers to strategies for building a strong food/farm brand, connecting with resellers and how best to optimize relationships with retail partners to create awareness, sell your product, and grow a sustainable food business. The workshop will wrap up with how to close a sales deal - and turn all the hard work into an order! Industry professionals will provide best practices to help farmers and food entrepreneurs avoid common missteps. In this workshop, we will dive into the following 5 sections: 1.Is your product or marketing concept economically feasible? What your Aunt Betty told you, "This tastes so good you should put it in a jar and sell it!" What your Aunt Betty forgot to ask, "Do you think you could make any money selling this stuff?" NABC will get you on your way to conducting an effective feasibility study.
2.Understanding consumer insights and food trends and today's competitive landscape. Telling your story: learn how brand development works and the power of authentic messaging. Create an elevator pitch! 3.Using social media the right way, including best practices, examples of what works, and what doesn't...! 4. Retail merchandizing: Learn about correct pricing and margins through the product pipeline, product positioning and understanding category management, product launch and how to sustain/maintain shelf space. Optimizing retail partner relations and reinventing your brand - how to stay fresh in the market. 5. Wrap up: how to close the deal and turn your hard work into an order! Prepare for foodservice or retail sales calls including strategies, subject matter, and most effective presentation materials.
