An evening of flamenco puro featuring a rare US appearance of the legendary singer/dancer "El Funi" (Miguel Pena Vargas), an icon of Spanish Gypsy culture. With his gallant, rooster-like stance, trademark white scarf, and impeccable blue suit, he reminds audiences of a Gypsy version of the late Cuban bolero singer Ibrahim Ferrer. A sublimely skilled festero, his presence on the stage is unmistakably "El Funi" and is unforgettable.
The Arte y Pureza company returns to the US after their sold-out 2006 tour, this time with seven members led by the charismatic "El Funi". Hailed by critics as "fierce and triumphant" in their mastery of the oldest styles of Gypsy song and dance, their improvisation and incredible display of raw emotion bring audiences to their feet time after time.
Arte y Pureza is dedicated to the preservation of traditional, pure flamenco from the gypsy neighborhoods of Andaluca in Spain. The company includes guitarists ANTONIO MOYA, Spain's 2006 Guitarist of the Year and ETHAN MARGOLIS who accompanied El Funi on his most recent CD, along with the renowned singer GABRIEL "PIES PLOMO" (son of the legendary Jos de la Tomasa) and CIHTLI OCAMPO "LA GALLARDI"(dancer in Tony Gatlif's film "Exil"s). Singer/dancers JAVIER HEREDIA and Fabiola Perez are younger-generation artists who have already won high praise throughout Europe as bearers of the tradition who will insure the future of flamenco.
