The Dilettanti Society Happy Hour Presented by Art in the Age: Cocktails and Show and Tell in the Morbid Anatomy Library : Prepared Skulls of Tribal Oceanic and African Culture with Special Guest Cole Harrell
Date: Thursday July 30th Time: 6pm - 8pm Admission: $20 ( $12 for Members ) LIMITED TO 20 PEOPLE
Join us for our new series of exclusive events taking place in the heart and soul of our institution: The Morbid Anatomy Library. Loosely inspired by the Dilettanti Society, a society of 18th century aristocrats and scholars eager to share their love for art and knowledge around a good drink, The Morbid Anatomy Museum is proud to open the doors of its permanent collection for a few late afternoon libations and the celebration of all things arcane and spectacular.
Tonight, our special guest Cole Harrell will share with us his passion for Oceanic and African Tribal Art.
Throughout human history, we as a species have always been fascinated by death, and the preservation of those taken from us by it. Cultures all over the globe have developed distinct ways to process and mourn death. During this show and tell Cole will be focusing on the human skull and the ways different cultures manipulate it as part of their anthropological mourning/ grieving process.
Primarily looking at prepared skulls of tribal Oceanic, African cultures, he will identify and elaborate on several themes and ideas present in all examples (such as preservation, sanctification, emotional connectivity, spiritual/ identity preservation) while also highlighting the unique ways in which the cultures responsible for each visual specimen achieve those themes.
There will also be special music on victrola by Morbid Anatomy Arcane Media Specialist Joel Schlemowitz and other entertainments.
Complementary seasonal refreshment will be served by our sponsors Art in the Age.
