The Odyssey On Alma
In a unique partnership with San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and San Francisco Maritime National Park Association, We Players is adapting Homer's epic poem for presentation aboard Alma, weaving together this archetypical tale of travel, exploration, and home-coming with the Park's interpretive themes, and Alma's own layered local history.
Each performance will take place during a three-hour sail on San Francisco Bay, as the cast and crew weave real-time line handling with Homer's stirring account of weary seafarers striking sail for home. At the conclusion of the sail, all passengers are requested to continue the adventure and join the performers and crew for feedback, storytelling and a light reception aboard historic ferryboat Eureka.
We Players is pleased to announce our collaboration with talented local artists for our Floating Gallery -
Jared Gutekunst: The Cyclops' great eye
Monica Lundy & Jessie Thatcher: The House of the Dead
Bob Watts: Sea Perils
NOTE: These performances aboard Alma are the first phase of We Players' multi-year exploration of the arc of leaving home, journeying, and returning, via Homer's ancient epic, The Odyssey. This limited engagement event, marks the first time that We Players is charging a ticket price, as we need to ensure cost recovery for our park partners and ourselves. We are actively preparing a full-scale, by-donation, traveling, choose-your-own-adventure version of The Odyssey for Angel Island in Spring 2012. We Players thanks you in advance for coming aboard and filling our sails at the beginning of this adventure!
We have arranged for a flat rate parking special at Ghirardelli Square Parking garage (the closest parking option to Hyde St. Pier). You must purchase a parking voucher in advance (in addition to your event ticket), and your pre-paid coupon, necessary for exiting the garage, will be given to you upon check in/ registration.
*Please respond to our questionnaire! San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association, and We Players want to know a bit about program attendees and demographics information helps We Players receive future grants.
**THIS EVENT HAS A STRICT REFUND POLICY. No refunds will be processed by Brown Paper Tickets more than 12 hours after the time of purchase without the authorization of the producer.**
