The Last Waltz

Not only was this directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and filmed in San Francisco (at Winterland in 1976) but it also contains some of the greatest rock performances ever committed to film (The Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morison, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John and Neil Young). It was filmed when The Band was at its creative peak but had decided to retire from touring, because the group was tired of life on the road. It remains arguably the best rock movie ever made and, in the interviews with the band members, we get behind-the-scenes glimpses that hint at the disarray that precipitated such an early end to a great group. This played on the very first Red Vic calendar; thus it seems appropriate to play it again at the end of our 30th year. (117m)
