Coo & Howl is a 5-person collective of family members and friends, most of whom have performed together in Boston bands for the last ten years. These close musical partnerships have allowed the band to develop a uniquely collaborative writing style. Each song is balanced by a tension between influencesand hints at recognizable genres without falling prey to the conventional trappings of any particular one. Even a casual listen to either of the band's EPs (Water Came & Cooled Us All, Esses) offers a rewarding experience that covers a lot of sonic ground. Shifting subtly between folk, psychedelia, blues and classical, the music twists and turns without sacrificing a pop-oriented focus on melody. A more careful listen reveals the band's obsessive attention to composition and arrangement. Layers of little sounds bring the songs to life, and betray a real love of the recording process. Coo & Howl make music for the pure joy of it. And it shows.
"My Son's Home is well-stocked with stirring narratives and sketches that just happen to be almost unremittingly obsessed with the crypt. Yet what's really remarkable about the record is the band's ability to treat death from so many different perspectives and with such a widely divergent range of moods and sympathies. There are moments of haunting, fragile stillness here... Perhaps most admirably of all, the Roadside Graves excel at the brave and difficult paradox of suffusing death with life, injecting vivacity and humor into their reflections on mortality." - Pitchfork
The various members of Summer Villains met one night after an unsuccessful round of speed-dating. Shooting and sipping away their sorrows at their favorite suck-em-down joint, a grand idea was had: let's start a band and lets have that band not suck and then lets use that band to meet women who will mate with us and tend to our children while we toil away at our unrewarding day jobs! So far, SV has managed to achieve the "not suck" part, but no member has sired offspring and no member has found his soul-mate. That's where you come in. Help us find soul-mates!!! And if you can't do that, help us in our quest to find the best pizza in and around the somerville/medford/winchester area! Our current frontrunner: Louie's in Woburn. 2nd place: Toni's by George in Medford.
