Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play
By Joe Landry Directed by Alene Stewart
This is an enactment of a 1940s radio broadcast of 3 Alfred Hitchcock films assembled to be produced as a live radio show (complete with advertisements). The first one is The Lodger set in a town terrorized by a serial killer. When a mysterious man comes to rent a room at a lodging house the intrigue begins. Is he interested in the lodge keeper's daughter for romantic reasons or is he the serial killer and is she his next target? The second drama is Sabotage with political suspense. Avengers are threatening to set off a bomb in a crowded public place in order to cause widespread panic (an all too modern topic). To add to the suspense for the audience, the bomb is put into the hands of an innocent boy and the audience watches as the time ticks by toward the hour of its detonation as the hero races to stop the bombing. The third play is a political intrigue, 39 Steps which deals with spies, murder and love. It is thought that this story was the template for North by Northwest. The hero who is trying to protect his homeland from enemies both foreign and domestic, encounters love and together they save their country.
