| Description |
| It has been said that "many a love affair with Mahler has begun with the sunlit Fourth Symphony". Uncharacteristic of much of his other work, the Fourth employs a smaller orchestra and is almost completely involved with the bright end of the expressive range. The composer plays with the orchestra as with a kaleidoscope, mixing various combinations of instruments and themes in unexpected and charming ways. Brahms' interest in the passionate and intense music of the gypsy idiom found its way into many of his works. The Gypsy Songs, for chorus and piano, describe the pleasures of flirting and love. In the singing and accompaniment, one can visualize the colors and the twirling skirts and hear the intricate sounds of energetic violins and squeeze boxes. This version of Kechley's Psalm 100 for organ, orchestra and chorus was first performed in 2000. Its theme of praise and jubilation is particularly wonderful expressed by these forces. |
