Sin Fronteras
Sin Frontereas presents an enchanting evening of Latin American folk music in the Nueva Cancion tradition. We are heading to Chile to record and hope you'll join us for this special send-off concert!
Founded in the winter of 2002 to celebrate and share the rich folkloric music traditions of Latin America with Puget Sound audiences, Sin Fronteras (which means "Without Borders") is a six-member ensemble comprised of musicians from the U.S., Chile, Colombia and Iran. Our repertoire showcases the incredible diversity of Latin folkloric styles and emphasizes the strong Latin American tradition of social commentary via song. Our songs speak of the joys and sorrows of campesino life and universal struggles for peace, social justice, love, and unity. We draw heavily on the Nueva Cancion tradition of Latin America and interpret songs from across the continent: Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Ecuador, with special emphasis on Chilean composers.
Our arrangements feature a fusion of traditional Andean instruments like quena (straight flute), zampona (pan flute), bombo (bass drum) and charango with the Spanish guitar, Caribbean clave & maracas, and tight vocal harmony. Kurdish percussionist Ahmad Yousefbeigi has brought an entirely new flavor to our arrangements, adding the Middle Eastern darboka. And former member and invited musical guest Renato Cerro will integrate the ud and Turkish saz on several songs, making for truly original interpretations of Violeta Parra and Victor Jara compositions.
We look forward to seeing you on the 18th!
