About the course:
Feed your passion for sustainable gardening with the Galiano Conservancy Association's Permaculture Food Forest Workshop and Practicum. Permaculture is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, and environmental design that develops sustainable architecture and self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems. This course will use the fundamentals of permaculture to learn how to design a sustainable food forest that fits your site, personal and economic needs. This course will also contain tips and tricks for professional growers, such as how to get a jump-start on the season, how to protect your crop from frost, and how to design a fertility plan. Included in the course will also be a hands-on session on budding and grafting; learn how to customize your fruit trees to fit your needs.
The course will be broken into two parts, the workshop and the practicum. The workshop is a two day intensive program designed to teach you about the basics of starting your own food forest. Discussions on soil, composting, perennial plant knowledge, species selection, time lines, and planning a food forest will be included in the workshop. The practicum will be a 3 day, hands-on application of the knowledge and information learned in the workshop, and will be applied to an emerging food forest on Galiano Island.
Please note that food and camping equipment is not provided. On-site camping is free to all workshop and practicum participants during the course.
