Mindful Writing: Finding Ourselves in the Natural World

Joan Didion was not thinking about mindfulness when she wrote that quote, but she does indeed sum it up quite effectively. In the writing class Mindful Writing: Finding Ourselves in the Natural World, participants use mindful techniques that can help them to look, see and understand a subject more deeply through writing.
Participants will first be introduced to the basics of mindfulness and then how it can be used for one's writing. We will use mindful writing exercises and read short excerpts from the nature writing genre by writers who discuss and demonstrate the importance of mindfulness in their writing, The class will conclude with one poem or short-short essay (1-2 pages) by each participant. We will have optional sharing of these pieces with the other participants.
About the Instructor:
Anda Peterson is a part-time instructor of creative and professional writing at USF-SP. She has published poetry, essays, and feature stories in a variety of magazines. She is the author of "Walks with Yogi, The Enlightenment Experiment".
