Alayo Dance Company premiers Grief with guest choreographers Joti Singh and Nelson Reyes.
Grief examines and explores physical, spiritual and material loss in the 21st Century in relation to war, immigration, natural disaster, and economic downturn. Conscious of such current, pressing issues, Company Director, Ramon Ramos Alayo taps in to personal grief stemming from the death of his mother several years ago, and considers what psychologist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross refers to as The Five Stages of Grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Grief examines the relevance of these stages today with three main characters, who are guided through each stage by Oya, the Yoruban guardian of the cemetery. Dancers articulate, explore and embody grief's emotional components through an innovative fusion of Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban folkloric and modern technique, to traditional and African-inspired live music.
