The award-winning California Youth Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Leo Eylar, will showcase the CYS 2010 Young Artist Competition winner, Rieko Tsuchida, in its upcoming March 20th concert. The California Youth Symphony March concert program will include works by Ravel and Shostakovich and will include Ms. Tsuchida's solo piano concerto.
The California Youth Symphony March 20, 2011 concert (2:30p.m. Sunday at Cupertino's Flint Center) presents a virtuoso musical travelogue opening with the exuberant Valse nobles et sentimentales, a suite of waltzes composed by French composer Maurice Ravel in 1912. With its chaotic kaleidoscope and intensity of feelings, Symphony #15 by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was the composer's last work performed in Moscow on January 8, 1972. The program's pièce de résistance will be young piano soloist Rieko Tsuchida, 16, winner of the California Youth Symphony 2010 Young Artist Competition, performing the dramatic Piano Concerto No. 1 by Peter Tchaikovsky, considered one of the most popular of his works and among the best known of all piano concerti.
