FENCES by August Wilson
The Morningside Players is a collective, professional, non-profit theater company dedicated to presenting vibrant, meaningful new works and classic plays to our Morningside Heights community and beyond. We are located in our rec center/ theater space at 100 La Salle St.
The Players won an AUDELCO award in 2014 for our production of THE OLD SETTLER by John Henry Redwood.
We are proud to present this Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play by August Wilson. It is one of his ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle" plays . This vibrant drama tells the story of Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues, who is now working as a garbage collector in 1957 Pittsburgh. He was excluded from the major leagues in his prime, and his bitterness takes a toll on all of his relationships. This is the story of a man and his family struggling to surmount the pressures of being poor and black; and despite that circumstance, to fight for dignity and maintain a dream.
It is directed by Arthur French, a leading figure in Black Theater in New York City. He has appeared on and off-Broadway. He has worked extensively with the Negro Ensemble Company, Classical Theater of Harlem, the New Federal Theatre, and The Morningside Players. He won AUDELCO awards for Best Director and Best Production for his production of August Wilson's MA RAINEY's BLACK BOTTOM at the Classical Theatre of Harlem in 2005.
The Morningside Players is located at 100 La Salle Street and Broadway, Morningside Heights in Manhattan, just north of Columbia University and just south of Harlem. Please enter through the rear of the building.
