LACMA/Artbites - The Hudson River School & Electric City
Literary Affairs and Artbites invite you to a Beyond the Book experience of popular book club book Electric City by Elizabeth Rosner. Join us for a private, curated tour of LACMA's exhibit, Nature and the American Vision: The Hudson River School before the museum opens to the public. After the tour we will reconvene at Surfas in Culver City to cook a lunch of mid-19th century American recipes, 17th century Dutch and English ones and a few Native American ingredients thrown in for good measure! Over lunch Julie Robinson will discuss Electric City which is set in Schenectady in the Hudson Valley.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Drawn entirely from the premier collection of The New-York Historical Society, Nature and the American Vision: The Hudson River School features forty-five outstanding American landscape paintings from the nineteenth-century. Among the artists represented in the exhibition are the heroes of the American landscape movement: Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, and Albert Bierstadt, among others.
Arranged thematically by place, the exhibition is designed as a grand tour of the American landscape culminating wi The Course of Empire (183436), a visual feast and meditation about civilization and the potential challenges facing the young country.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Upstate New York, at the confluence of the great Hudson River and its mighty tributary the Mohawk from this stunning landscape came the creation of a new world of science. In 1887, Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works here and in 1892, it became the headquarters of a major manufacturing company, giving the town its nickname: Electric City. http://www.amazon.com/Electric-City-Novel-Elizabeth-Rosner/dp/1619023466
