Executive Session With Skip Mckinley
The Executive Session is the name of the ensemble created by flutist Michael "Skip" McKinley which presents a wonderfully unique blend of mainly Irish traditional music with American folk roots music. The arrangements are further flavored by the musicians Skip has gathered for this musical journey: pianist Glenn Hardy and percussionist Mance Grady.
Skip was born in Missouri in 1951 and began playing the saxophone at age eight. In junior high he won top honors and his high school jazz band won top state honors and recorded an album with celebrity "Doc" Severnson.
Skip stepped into the Boston music scene in 1977 by teaching himself to play the traditional wood flute and by frequenting festivals, such as Fox Hollow in New York and the Eisteddfod in Massachusetts. In 1981, Skip won both the solo and trio All-Ireland competitions in New York and performed with the Lewis Family and Martin Hayes at the Festival Interceltic in L'Orient, France. Major influences to Skip's style have been the flute and piping traditions of County Clare.
