Eavesdropping: Multimedia Michael Fahres: Swing low, high top, fast trains
Canon
In polyphonic European music canon represents a set technique of strict imitation, in which at least one voice follows another in its melodic or rhythmic identity. In Canon this principle is visualized in the context of the spaciousness of the sound. The word canon also reminds one of the word cannon (here loudspeaker cannon), which catapults sounds into the ether.
The Swing
The German poet Rainer Maria Rilke called childhood a prettified mistake. The situation of this video is so terrible, because neither the children in the video nor the viewer have the chance to simply step out of the created relationship that was forced upon them. Only the unaccomplishable, that these pictures partake as pictures of the beauty and the pain, permits a way out of the dilemma. In Jean-Honor Fragonard's painting "Swing" the skirts of the swinging fly thus opening a view into the paradise for the cavalier looking up from below. The merry Hedonism of this 18th Century erotism seems comparatively innocent in relation to the dark suction created by Lafontaine's pictures. As in early Ingmar Bergman films (Georg Bussmann)
Marcos
For humming-tops, Lightning, Breath controller
The video Marcos is a live recording of two concerts in Spain.
The electronic instruments as well as the big humming top Fram were played live.
Trains
This composition consists of sounds made by dolphins, click trains, which were recorded in a dolphinarium. These increasing and decreasing strings of clicks, which normally are 150,000 Hz high, had to be transposed into an audible maximum of 20,000Hz. The duration of these click trains was not changed. This video also deals with the expressiveness of two empty exhibition spaces that were transformed into art.
