In A Hand in Desire, EmSpace Dance riffs on the themes and images in A Streetcar Named Desire, while also considering what it means to take on an iconic piece of theater. A sweaty, boozy dance might be smashed up against a conversation about what it's like for a gay actor to play Stanley Kowalski in the shadow of Marlon Brando.
The format of the show is inspired by the poker games that recur in the play - there are 52 scenes of various lengths, each associated with a card. Some scenes will be performed every night, but others will be drawn at random during each show. Each performance will be a little different. But every performance promises to deliver a heady mixture of words, dance, live music, and a little high drama.
One Hand in Desire is co-directed by Erin Mei-Ling Stuart and Wolfgang Lancelot Wachalovsky and choreographed by Erin Mei-Ling Stuart in collaboration with the cast. Composer Daveen DiGiacamo wrote the music and will play live. The multitalented performers are Natalie Greene, Peter Griggs, Kegan Marling, Rowena Richie, and Christopher W. White
