Dunbar Elementary School was founded in 1857. It is the second oldest continuously operating school in California! Dunbar was one of the original public schools in Sonoma County and is still operating on the site where it was first established in 1857. Originally a one-room schoolhouse with 21 students, Dunbar now has 270 students on its oak-studded, rural campus in Glen Ellen. In addition to a strong focus on standards-based academics, Dunbar also offers its students a unique arts education with innovative programs such as Art-at-Lunch, the Fifth Grade Play, Hands-On Science and other programs.
Friends of Dunbar School (FODS) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2001. All funds raised by FODS PTO go to Dunbar and its Student Enrichment Programs in art, theater, sports, science and garden, as well as core school services including aides and facility equipment. "Moondance" is the major fundraising event of the year for FODS PTO. This is the tenth annual "Moondance". Every year it is held at the beautiful Atwood Ranch in Glen Ellen. Julie Atwood is considered Dunbar's fairy godmother. Her dedication to Dunbar is amazing!!! Our event is critical to ensuring a quality education for our children. With funds raised over the past 10 years, FODS PTO has dispersed more than $235,000 to help fund vital programs. This past summer, FODS PTO was able to match district funds and get 30 new computers for Dunbar! Each year some of the proceeds from Moondance are used to fund classroom aides. These people are vital in enabling our teachers to bring the best out in all of the students. There is an aide in every classroom, from kindergarten through 5th grade. Every year FODS PTO provides an annual stipend to each teacher to help reimburse them for the numerous out-of-pocket expenses that occur throughout the year.
