TownMusic: Gabriela Lena Frank & Joshua Roman
Town Hall Seattle Seattle, WA
Our season concludes with the ardent, brash, and very personal work of pianist Gabriela Lena Frank. A member of Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, a recipient of both a Guggenheim fellowship and a Latin Grammy, Frank's compositional mentors include legends like William Bolcom, Leslie Bassett and Samuel Jones. But her voice is defined by her own multicultural heritage: Born to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Frank is a self-styled musical anthropologist whose work reflects her travel in South America and her immersion in Latin-American folklore, incorporating mythology and native musical styles into a western classical frame that is uniquely her own. This Town Hall concert for string quartet and piano will feature works by Bartok, Bolcom, and Chou Wen Chung, as well as a newly commissioned piece by Frank for Joshua Roman.
