ROLL CALL Book #1 in the Roll Call Trilogy by Gwen Mansfield Reading/Signing
Have you ever been to a book reading? Join 9 actors reading four chapters from ROLL CALL, a post-apocalyptic young adult novel. All ticket sales benefit Crosspoint students and teachers traveling in March to the Appalachia Mountains in West Virginia to help restore the homes of those living in extreme poverty. In 2067 the asteroid Jurbay severs the continent, amputating 22 western states and submerging them into the Pacific Ocean in the course of a day. Sixteen years later, caught in the 2083 post-apocalyptic world, Avery DeTornada and her comrades Shaw, McGinty and Pasha operate as subterraneans undercover, working in the city of Reichel within the oppressive government of The Third. After discovery, they are hunted and flee for Red Grove, the command center for The 28 United. Along the way they collect a ragtag army of dump pickers, library boys and minstrels, but it's not enough. Who will stand against The Third, guaranteeing The 28 United will remain? There's gonna be a roll call...add your name to the list.
AGE RECOMMENDATION: 8th grade and up. If your kids have read the book or watched the film THE HUNGER GAMES, they will be familiar with this post-apocalyptic young adult genre, including light science fiction. Some brief complex political background unfolds in the beginning.
