New Works: Resistance Is Useless
Resistance Is Useless is Creature Theater's new distopian sci-fi dance comedy, using fitness culture as a metaphor for the liberation of the body. "Resistance" is used here in its sense as "strength training" as well as its sense of "opposition", and is meant to invite political and psychological interpretations. Inspired by health magazines and sports movies, Team Creature is preparing for the big game. We are in a near-future fitness boot camp that may be an actual boot camp. We are In It To Win It, we know that Practice Makes Perfect and that there is No Gain Without Pain. Team practice includes feats of strength and endurance, drills for precision and adaptability, emotionally as well as musculoskeletally--performed as a blend of postmodern dance, physical theater, and aerobics. CJ Holm is a dance artist, teacher, and aspiring gardener based in Brooklyn. CJ has shown work at BAX, Chez Bushwick, Dixon Place, Galapagos, and the World Financial Center. CJ is the recipient of a 2010 PILLAR space grant through Bodyart Studios. Creature Theater prioritizes bodily autonomy in its creative practice. Creature's work is balanced between physically adventurous movement invention and an ongoing investigation into human strategies, limitations, motivations, and dreams.
