TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR- SEE YOU TONIGHT!
On June 11, Syracuse will take part in Josh Fox's exclusive 20-stop tour of Pennsylvania and New York in a run-up to the June 21st HBO premiere of his new film Gasland, winner of this year's Sundance Special Jury Prize. A coalition of organizations have come together to organize the screening event, which will take place at the Palace Theater, 2384 James Street, Syracuse, NY 13206 at 7 PM on June 11. Director Josh Fox will be there to introduce the film and for discussion afterward! The purpose of this event will be to raise awareness about the negative impact of natural gas drilling on public health and the environment. Tickets are available for $5 in advance online or from the Syracuse Cultural Workers, 400 Lodi St. Syracuse, and $7 at the door. SCW can be contacted at 315-474-1132 x 2.
Gasland tells the story of the effects of the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history that is sweeping across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND.
