Hedwig Dances Concert at Northwestern University
Hedwig Dances presents works by world-renowned artists from its celebratory 25th Season at Northwestern University's Marjorie Ward Marshall Ballroom Theater, 10 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL on Saturday, June 5 at 8 p.m. Three dances combine poetic choreography with sculptural artifacts, ephemeral images and haunting music as we encounter Fellini-esque characters, stunning aerialists and other muses on a journey from circus tent to dream-like realm. General Admission tickets are $20 and $10 for students/seniors.
The concert includes "Moi Aussi," a compelling duet by Company member Michel Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez is a former principal dancer with Havana-based Danza Contemporanea de Cuba. Danced by Rodriguez and his partner, Jessie Gutierrez, "Moi Aussi" addresses the balance between dependence and independence within the context of a relationship.
The evening continues with "Dust" by Andrea Miller, former Ensemble Batsheva of Israel dancer and Director of Gallim Dance in New York City. Ms. Miller is known for her Humphrey-Weidman influenced movement that acknowledges the weight of the human body and the ways in which emotion affects and perhaps deforms it. "Dust" is a striking duet created especially for Hedwig Dances, featuring Company members Justin Deschamps and Michel Rodriguez. The dance addresses mortality and the fragility of life.
The evening concludes with "Sawdust Palace Suite" by MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow and New York City-based choreographer Susan Marshall. The piece is drawn from the travails and serendipitous moments of everyday life. It incorporates elements of burlesque, cabaret, and vaudeville to create an outrageous and touching piece. The work features costume design by Carol Genetti based on the designs of Kasia Walicka Maimone and sound design by Jane Shaw.
