Nueva Cancion: Songs of Love and Justice
The music of our spring concert, titled Nueva Cancion: Songs of Love and Justice, is drawn from a movement that took shape first in the southern cone of South America during the late 1950s and early 1960s and spread northward into many Latin American countries, including the Caribbean. In every variation of the music there was a strong emphasis on the use of traditional music, and on protest of political oppression. The themes were paralleled in the United States in the social protest movements of the same era. For that reason we have included well-known U.S. Civil Rights songs such as We Shall Overcome and This Little Light of Mine in our concert. Cancion con Todos, A Song for All People in the Americas invites all the Americas people to sing together as a family.
