Word Free DC
Our first Word Free DC event features two alt-classical acts, and two jazz groups - although these labels are not an easy fit for any of the featured performers:
The Low End String Quartet (a homegrown group) is arguably a rock string quartet, but they are not a rock band and they are not a classical ensemble. They are both, yet they are neither.
Vattel Cherry's Soulstation (Baltimore) is a jazz big-band, but their music is quite unlike any big-band music of the past that you may be familiar with.
Graham Reynolds (Austin, TX) is a composer who defies categorization. He will be presenting a new work for piano, violin, and cello, but this is not classical music.
Trevor Dunn's Proofreaders (NYC) are a jazz group dedicated to the music of Ornette Coleman. Half of the band members have serious rock credibility, having played in Mr. Bungle, At the Drive-in, and with members of TV on the Radio. They are also avant-jazz veterans who perform regularly with John Zorn's Electric Masada and John Zorn's Moonchild, in addition to loads of groups with a veritable who's-who of modern jazz.
What do they all have in common? Awesome music. This night will be very special. They will blow your mind. Guaranteed.
