Description
MJFF SHORT-ISH SHORTS PROGRAM
The Movies on Exchange: Tuesday, March 20, 5:30 pm.

ILONA, UPSTAIRS
Directed by Melissa Hammel.
US, 2005, 24 min., English.

Melissa Hammel worked with documentary legend Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens, Gimme Shelter) to create this stunning portrait of her eccentric and elusive West Village neighbor Ilona - an octogenarian artist, performer, false eyelash-wearer, and Holocaust survivor.

UNDER THE ROLLER COASTER
Directed by Lila Place.
US, 2005, 15 min., English.

Brooklyn native Mae Timpano remembers Coney Island in its heyday, when she and her Jewish long-time companion, Freddy Moran, lived in a house underneath the famous Thunderbolt Roller Coaster.

NATURALIZED
Directed by Julia Kots.
US, 2006, 8 min., Russian and English with English subtitles.

A Russian immigrant argues with his overbearing family who can't comprehend why he wants to undergo the ultimate rite of male Jewish identity.

MAYOR OF THE WEST SIDE
Directed by Judd Ehrlich.
US, 2003, 38 min., English.

As he prepares for his Bar Mitzvah, mentally challenged eighteen-year-old Mark Puddington's parents question the meaning of this rite of passage for their son who relies on them completely to provide for his most basic needs. Filmmaker Judd Ehrlich spent ten years working as a caretaker for the Puddingtons, and he offers us a compassionate yet unsentimental portrait of a family addressing difficult questions about their son's future.
