"The Messenger"+ discussion w/ dir. Oren Moverman, actor Ben Foster, & composer Nathan Larson
Maysles Cinema New York, NY
The Messenger (Oren Moverman, 2009, 113 min.)
"One of the decade's most beautifully acted films."- Stephen Holden, New York Times "THE MESSENGER offers one of the most shrewdly perceptive portraits of military men to have appeared in American movies since such classics as 'From Here to Eternity' and 'The Last Detail.'"- David Denby, New Yorker
Ben Foster stars as Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant who has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Armys Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia (Samantha Morton), to whom he has just delivered the news of her husbands death, Wills emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.
Followed by a discussion with director Oren Moverman, actor Ben Foster, and composer Nathan Larson.
Part of the Maysles Cinema's monthly "Faux Real" series, exploring truth telling in narrative film.
