Event
Pilot 56- "My Young Nostalgic Life"
Chosen from over 60 applicants, six strong female voices emerge, presenting dances on March 27-28, 2010. This is Pilots 56th run, and as the only program of its kind. ODC provides the performance venue, technical production, lighting, and box office, but Pilot challenges choreographers to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and produce a concert on a discretionary budget of $300. The six artists meet every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. for eleven weeks to collaborate and share production duties. Members of ODC staff, ranging from public relations, marketing and box office personneleven Director Rob Bailisgenerously support Pilot artists by taking turns to provide consultation during the Friday meetings. Pilot artists must quickly learn the production tasks: coordinating a photo shoot, giving a title to the show, conducting rehearsals, procuring food and wine for the reception, sell tickets, designing flyers, printing programs, and yes, even writing this press release. As a reward the Pilot program offers mentorship to the choreographers. This year acclaimed Bay Area artist Lizz Roman takes on the role of lead mentor.
Its been a few years since anyone has had a hand in my choreographic process from beginning to end. Lizz Roman and my fellow PILOT artists are taking stock in what I do. They challenge my choices. Every artist who participates in PILOT will come out of this experience more informed, better equipped, and truly inspired to continue making art. -Michelle Fletcher PILOT 56 Artist
Pilot 56 artists come from a diverse background of culture and dance influence. Elizabeth Castaneda, having already participated in two previous Pilot programs, is the group facilitatorthe go-to veteran. Castanedas piece will walk the audience through the exhibition hall of her heart, exploring the essential motivations and emotions of life. Angela Demmel, an MFA candidate at Mills College, offers a piece that will explore dream space, drawing inspiration from Salvador Dali paintings. Yukie Fujimoto, a former ODC/Dance dancer and a mother of two boys, is crafting a duet inspired by doll costumes. With these inanimate bodies Fujimoto will express the artlessness of uncoupling oneself from bizarre attachments. Sarah Lewin recently graduated and moved to San Francisco. This will be her first time choreographing outside of a scholastic institution. She will present a duet that focuses on snapshot moments in time. Lewin is playing with the ephemeral nature of memory and the ways in which our present and future self can deteriorate. Michelle Fletcher is working on a full-length piece about marijuana and human energy. Fletcher will utilize Pilot 56 to craft the final section, which taps into the bodys ability to create natural highs. Last, but certainly not least, is Noosh Afarin. Afarin is a Persian physician who brings passionate, underground dance (illegal in Iran) to the Pilot stage. "Rooftop Awakening" Afarins piece shares the healing power of community, as well as the ongoing struggle to achieve individual rights under oppression.
