MLK Celebration #BlackLivesMatter
Seattle University Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) invites you to our Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. This year we have decided to center our program on #BlackLivesMatter. We will create a living room conversation amongst local black scholars, activists, artists, & students. Tiffany Gray, OMA Director will facilitate the space.

The MLK Celebration is on Tuesday January 20th 6-7:30pm in Pigott Auditorium with a reception to follow.

This event is free and open to the public.

OMA Ferguson Solidarity Statement December 1, 2014

The actions taken by our state-based systems in Ferguson, MO is the continuation of a long history of the United States devaluing Black lives. The deadly combination of racism, police profiling, excessive use of lethal force and a general disregard for the lives of black and brown people is our greatest enemy.

We collectively mourn for Michael Brown and every victim of state-based violence. We are in solidarity with our colleagues in the broader civil rights community in condemning the grand jury decision, and send our strength and support to the family and friends of Michael Brown and the entire Ferguson community as they continue to grieve and struggle for justice.

At OMA, we understand that state-based violence is an issue that affects us all and we must continue to work as a collective campus community for justice. Our primary work at OMA is to provide space for all students to gather, to educate and be educated, to heal from their own experiences of institutionalized racism, to address structural racism in our everyday lives, and to be in solidarity across our differences of identity and experience.

In closing, the powerful words of James Baldwin still ring true "It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have"

In solidarity,

Office of Multicultural Affairs Staff
