Teatro Luna: Americas All-Latina Theatre

Teatro Luna is America's all-Latina theatre dedicated to creating original devised and single-author work that honors Latina lives and showcases the talents of self-identifying Latina/Hispana artists and is currently the only all-female company active in the Latina/o Theatre Commons. Founded in 2000, Luna is dedicated to expanding the range of Latina and WOC roles and stories visible on the Chicago stage and beyond. At the center of their work is the idea that theatre is one of the most powerful and dynamic tools for real social change, and their mission is to instigate change in the way the industry and the mainstream views women of color. For the past fourteen years, Teatro Luna has produced full seasons of original full-length and one-off events in Chicago, as well as tours to colleges, universities, and performance venues across the country with a blend of ensemble-created performances, workshops and lectures. In 2012, Teatro Luna began to develop single author work in an ensemble setting with the world premiere of Diane Rodriguez's LIVING LARGE IN A MINI KIND OF WAY. In the summer of 2013, Teatro Luna embarked on an ambitious self-produced national tour across sixteen cities in eight states, and made their European debut at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They are currently in residence at Instituto Cervantes of Chicago and are launching Teatro Luna West, a Los Angeles-based ensemble of artists, in Fall 2014. Teatro Luna is an award-winning theatre company whose work has been featured in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, American Theatre Magazine, NBC, Univision, NPR, and other major outlets and publications on a wide spectrum ranging from scholarship to cultural, and everything in between.
