What is significant about flamenco is its cultural mix. It represents the influences of extremely divergent cultures: the Moors, Sephardic Jews, and Gypsies predominant in the Andalusian area of Spain.  Originally an informal cultural practice set in the home, then social settings, has now blossomed into a art form appreciated and treasured worldwide.

This program explores a few perspectives on Flamenco, from the traditional to how it continues to draw on other cultural influences today. Three Chicago based groups perform their unique take on the art form: Idilio's traditional style in a trio format, The Cuban influenced Rumba Flamenca of El Payo, and a new world fusion Flamenco style by Las Guitarras de Espana. Special guests include internationally renowned dancer and Maestro de Bularias Timo Lozano, and the phenomenal Andalucian born flautist and singer Alfonso Cid.

Biographies

Las Guitarras de Espana (The Guitars of Spain) performs "Spanish guitar influenced world music and dance." The ensemble performs a fusion of Cuban son, rumba, R&B, Latin-jazz, blues, and African percussion with an underlying flamenco music and dance focus.  Members of the ensemble have roots from Brazil, Peru, Italy, Cuba, Mexico, and Portugal and they have traveled to, and performed or studied in, over 30 countries. In the fall of 2005, the ensemble, in collaboration with Clinard Dance Theatre, presented internationally acclaimed "Unraveling Rhythms".  In 2009, the ensemble produced a new work entitled "Music and Movement" which featured re-arranged Spanish guitar compositions interpreted by flamenco, modern, and African dance.  The ensemble has also released four CDs to critical acclaim worldwide.

El Payo is a Rumba/Nuevo Flamenco-Fused group based in Chicago. Its members come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, hailing from countries such as Mexico, Ecuador, Columbia and the United States. Their distinct sound is influenced by a rich combination of rumbas, traditional and modern flamenco, as well Flamenco-fused original compositions.  They have opened up for internationally known artists like Juan Carmona, Pitingo, and Lila Downs. The group is led by singer David Gonzalez, flamenco guitarists David Chiriboga, percussionist/drummer Raul Fernandez, dancer/percussionist Edwin Suarez. bass guitarist Tom Kimball, and trumpet player Victor Garcia.

Idilio was formed in 2008 by singer/dancer Chiara Mangiameli, guitarist Diego Alonso, and percussionist Kassandra Kocoshis in the heart of Chicago. The group performs contemporary flamenco music composed by its members as well as innovative interpretations of traditional flamenco songs. Idilio writes and arranges flamenco music with subtle jazz, pop, and rock influences appealing to musicians and non-musicians alike.   The groups live performances and CD Idilio exhibit energetic and sensual flamenco melodies with powerful dynamics and exciting rhythmic interplay.

Timo Lozano began his dance training at the early age of 6, and at 17 was discovered by the internationally known Spanish dancer Jose Greco.  After touring the world as a soloist with the Jose Grego Spanish Dance Company he moved to Spain where he then performed with some of the most famous dance companies. Timo has also danced along side some of the greatest flamenco dancers of our time, such as Matilda Coral, Raphael el Negro, Angelita Vargas, La Chana and many more.  Besides dancing flamenco Timo was also recognized as a highly acclaimed teacher for the world famous Amor de Dios dance school in Madrid, is an exquisite cajon player, and recognized as a Maestro de Bulerias.  As if his resume isn't impressive enough, he also wrote the screenplay for the highly acclaimed motion picture Alma Gitana, where he acted  choreographed.

Alfonso Cid was born and raised in Seville, the heartland of Flamenco music. His mother, an amateur singer from Triana, a Flamenco enclave in Seville, and his grandfather, an aficionado of Flamenco were his earliest influences. Alfonso's love for Flamenco intensified in his teens after he realized the depth and beauty of this Andalusian tradition, and the importance of preserving this art form for future generations.

He has studied at the Seville Conservatory, Cristina Heeren Foundation for Flamenco Art in Seville with masters Paco Taranto and flamenco singer Rocio Marquez, and best of all has participated in one of the most significant activities of his study at the Pena Flamenca Torres-Macarena since 1987.  Since his arrival in New York in 1997, Alfonso has played with some of the most famous Flamenco artists and guitarists, as well as venues around the world.
