Synopsis:

Born the effeminate son of a communist German woman named Hedwig, Hansel Schmidt had a lonely childhood growing up in East Berlin, spending much of his youth listening to American glam rock and pretending to be a "crypto-homo-rocker" of the 70's.

After being kicked out of university for a lecture on the "aggressive influence of German philosophy on rock-and-roll", Hansel meets Luther  an American G.I. who falls in love with the boy and seduces him. Realizing her son has no future in communist Germany, Hedwig suggests Hansel undergo a sex change operation, marry Luther and leave the country. She gives Hansel her passport, and her name.

All did not go as planned with a botched operation  leaving Hedwig with an angry inch  and Luther leaving her. Stripped of her identity, Hedwig is forced to create a new life for herself. As she struggles to unite her male and female side, Hedwig discovers the intricacies of her own identity: grown-up and child, man and woman, old and new.

While doing odd jobs, Hedwig meets Tommy Speck, a wide-eyed introvert who is intrigued by Hedwig's music and learns all he can from the talented drag queen. Tommy quickly rises to fame, but does not acknowledge Hedwig as the one who molded him into a world-wide star.
