THE WOMAN WHO WALKED ACROSS AMERICA / FIONNUALA - PUIPEAD BEAG AR THURAS MOR
2013/Ireland (52 min)
Director: John O'Donnell

THE WOMAN WHO WALKED ACROSS AMERICA (An Bhean A Shiúil Trasna Mheiriceá) is a 52minute bi-lingual documentary funded by TG4 and The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland exploring the heroic journey of Mary Devine who crossed America on foot with her four year old daughter during the 1860s in a desperate attempt to return home to West Kerry in Ireland where she had emigrated from a number of years earlier.

It is a story of strength, will-power and the ultimate survival of an Irish woman as uncovered through the personal discovery by her direct descendant, broadcaster and poet Danny Sheehy.

With a beautiful and haunting score provided by Colm Mac Con Iomaire this lyrical film not only tells a story of emigration but also one of self-belief, hope and survival along with that elusive search for a better place. One of the most abiding images in the film is that of the lone woman carrying her child through a wild and wind-swept American landscape as she makes her way across the prairies of Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and into New York itself. We hear much about those who left, never to return but rarely do we hear about those who came back.

Fionnuala - Puipéad Beag Ar Thuras Mór
2013/Ireland (26 min)
Director: James Kelly

From their base on the windswept Atlantic coast of Ireland, a small puppetry company have, for years, delighted and engaged thousands of children throughout Ireland with their unique and magical take on stories, old and new.
We follow a four inch puppet Fionnuala, from the moment she comes to life in the hands of the puppet maker, through rehearsals and eventually on a voyage to a performance in 'faraway lands'. In so doing, we see a small yet ambitious company take its first step overseas to perform in Germany, a country steeped in the history and practice of puppetry.
How will Fionnuala and her minders fare? Featuring Irish music throughout, this is a charming introduction to a very special little world.
