Classes are one-hour long, and registration is $20 per class -- or all six classes for $100!
10:00 AM: Who's Who In Classic Burlesque
"You have to know the past to understand the present" -- Carl Sagan. Whether you're studying the cosmos or the stars of the burlesque stage, you have to know where you come from. This informative and sometimes scandalous slideshow introduces students to some of the famous and infamous characters who made burlesque what it is today.
11:00 AM: This IS My Day Job
Making the transition to full-time employer is an exhilarating and terrifying experience. This fast-paced, interactive class offers students who are considering taking the plunge into the world of self-employment an overview of both the obstacles and rewards they are likely to encounter. We'll explore Issues both personal (how do you convince your mom you want starve?) and professional (do I need to form a corporation?) and get you on the road to being a full-time, professional performing artist.
noon: Classic Boa Technique
Miss Mina Murray
The feathers will fly! Mina Murray is one of today's most elegant and classic stripteasers. A student of 'The First Lady of Burlesque', April March, Mina shares what she has learned with you! Students in this class will learn basic and advanced boa moves to enhance any dance routine, plus tips and tricks on selecting a boa; the different kinds of feathers; and boa care. Please wear comfortable clothing, dance shoes, and bring a boa if you have one. Inexpensive boas will be available for sale.
1:00 p.m.: Vocal Skills for Burlesquers
Dance doesn't need to be a silent art form, especially burlesque! You can flirt with your audience, sing, or tell a joke... and all of those need your voice! In this class, we'll go over some basic breath control and voice techniques to give your voice a little extra power both on stage and off. We'll discuss breathing techniques, how to project your voice, and proper diction on stage. We'll also talk about ways to incorporate vocal elements into your next routine!
2:00 p.m.: Warm-up...or DIE!
As dancers, we push our bodies to the limit every time we perform. The key to avoiding injury is a good warm-up! Part yoga, part ballet, and all fun, this class teaches students some basic and advanced stretches and warm-up techniques to keep your muscles safe from damage and to improve your flexibility!
3:00 p.m.: Choreography for One
Choreography lets you record and remember your dance and is the difference between being a professional dancer and someone who likes to dance. Join Boston Babydolls' lead choreographer Betty Blaize in an exploration of techniques for developing and recording choreography.
