Fall for Dance Concert
Join award-winning Michigan-based dance troupe People Dancing Company for a delightful performance of captivating new work. The company's repertory "is a dazzling display of the human form in motion" and offers witty performances with "an off-beat theatricality." The dancers possess "ethereal beauty" and a "satisfying physicality." This Company has won multiple grants, awards and honors and recently has performed in New York, Virginia, DC and Baltimore.

Dancers include: Tango Duo El Kronox, (Sophia and Jose,) Locally acclaimed Ballet Mistress and Contemporary Artist Rebecca Zahm with her cast Glenna Benietz and Sophia Daly, in "Letters." This piece is a tribute to all the women during World War II who were left behind to worry, wait, wonder, work, and pray. It often happened that the only link these women had to the people they loved were letters.

Company Artistic Director Christina Sears presents two new trios. These two works are: "Elegies for the Innocents" a response to recent gun violence in the USA, and "Big Red" a re-telling of the Little Red Riding Hood tale. "Elegies" is performed by Anna Rose, Guest Artist from Detroit, and Company members Apryl Renee Pipe and Rebecca Zahm. "Big Red" features dance students from Eastern Michigan University. The cast are: Mackenzie Fallow, Abby Kachinosky and Alexes King.

Soloist and Company Member Holly Fishman Matthews contributes three works, two group pieces and a solo. The Flamenco solo "Solea" is stunning and is accompanied by Dan Parisen performing live with Latin Classical Guitar. Two larger group works complete the program. "I and Thou" also devised and directed by Matthews, is an investigation of self and other and utilizes a movement palette of Capoira, Contemporary Modern and Contact Impvorisation. Performed by Matthews, Sears, Guest Arts Ivan Delacruz and Julie Kline, the dance is accompanied by Ken Kozora in an original improvised composition. The score features Kozora's drumming and percussion skills. Finally, the theatrical performance art piece, back by popular acclaim, "Virginia Slims and the Cheese Fondue" is a hillarious investigation of how popular culture and media from the Civiil Rights Era influences women's gender constructions to the present day. This dance, performed by co-creators Sears and Apryl Renee Pipe, both part-time Professors of Dance at Eastern Michigan University, features additional performers Audrey Carpenter, Kayleigh Crummey, and Lisa Dietz.

Here are some comments from the premiere performance at Detroit Dance Exchange: "Very Entertaining" and "Brave, Quirky, Cheeky!"

Join us for one of two performances. 5 pm and 7 pm. 7 pm is followed by an Optional Reception.
