Baromas (Forever)
Based on Sadanand Deshmukh's 2004 novel, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award from India's National Academy of Letters, Baromas delves into the hardships sustained by contemporary agrarian society. Filmed primarily in the rural settings of India's Amravati district, Dhiraj Meshram's first film aims at realism and social commentary encased in a captivating narrative that finds two educated, yet unemployed, brothers choosing disparate paths to combat the corrupt politicians, loan sharks and power brokers who thrive in such an ecosystem. One takes to banditry while the other turns to politics. Via this intimate story of one family, this essential film cleverly exposes the larger issues of the political milieu and socio-economic conditions of the countryside.  Baromas is not a tragedy but what actor Nasiruddin Shah describes a "searingly honest" description of rural problems.
