The Hunchback of Notre dame
This 1923 Universal Pictures presentation was the first big-budget film featuring legendary Lon Chaney. It forever cemented his reputation as a consummate photoplay star who uniquely was known for his roles rather than himself.
Taken directly from Victor Hugos classic tale of a beauty and a beast, Chaney plays the pitifully deformed church bell-ringer of Medieval Notre Dame who risks his life to save the lovely Esmerelda. Everything is unique in this adaptation from Chaneys elaborate makeup to the vast sets built on Universals backlot. This version was remade several times, but never equaled for sheer impact!
The film stars Lon Chaney , the man of a thousand faces, Ernest Torrence, Patsy Ruth Miller and in a pre-Phantom of the Opera role, Norman Kerry.
A silent film wouldnt be complete without expert accompaniment as it was originally presented. Returning from his triumphant grand opening performance last June, Ann Arbor theatre organist Steven Ball mans the console of our expanded 1927 theatre pipe organ to provide riveting music and effects to complete an authentic re-creation of this fascinating silent classic!
