Student Jazz Combo Competition Evening Concert
Keyboardist, band leader and composer Herbie Hancock has said, There is no better example of democracy than a jazz ensemble: individual freedom to express but with responsibility to the group.
With this ideal of music as a personal growth opportunity within a cooperative community in mind, Healdsburg Jazz is inviting area high schools to participate in a new, free program for high school musicians: the Student Jazz Combo Competition.
Completing the day-long competition, the Redwood Empire All-Stars will perform for an audience of budding jazz musicians, their family and friends, and the jazz-loving public. Led by Santa Rosa Junior College music teacher Bennett Friedman on tenor sax, with Doug Leibinger on trombone, Kasey Knudsen on alto, Carlitos Medrano on percussion (all pictured), plus Randy Vincent on guitar, Ken Cook on piano, Cliff Hugo on bass and Kendrick Freeman on drums, theyll show how far local jazz can go.
This evening concert shows off the talents not only the homegrown Redwood Empire All-Stars all high-caliber musicians who live in Sonoma County but of the high-school age kids who have taken part in the first SRCC. Earlier in the day the 11 teams will have met in professionally-juried competition, for prizes including a chance to open for headliner Lavay Smith and Her Red-Hot Skillet Lickers, at the Raven Theater on June 9.
