A VIEW FROM WITHIN
Award-winning filmmaker and photographer, Avishai Mekonen, will speak about his personal journey from Ethiopia to Israel and the unsung heroes who helped rescue Ethiopian Jewry.
At age 10 Avishai Mekonen left his village in Ethiopia and crossed over land through the Sudan to Israel. Kidnapped along the way, he was silent for years about his experience. Avishai was one of 8,000 Ethiopian Jews who made this covert journey known as "Operation Moses". The passage was made possible through the determination of the Israeli and American governments, world Jewish organizations, and Jewish Ethiopian activists, among others.
The role of the Jewish Ethiopian activists is a little known part of the larger story, and Avishai brings the role of these unsung heroes to light, in addition to his personal experience, in this talk.
