The Kevin and Claudia Bright New Music Series features exciting emerging artists who are shaping the future of American roots music. This series is named in honor of Kevin and Claudia Bright, lead donors to the Campaign for Caffe Lena.
Inspired by Bill Monroe, Sam Bush and Del McCoury, along with jazz greats Bill Evans and composer Danny Elfman, Old Salt Union from Belleville, IL boasts a unique and broad genetic make-up. The five members explore the jazz and blues roots of bluegrass in a mature and refreshing manner. Catchy hooks, dramatic chord progressions, thoughtful arrangements and tons of energy have made them front runners in the new generation of string music. In the past year theyve appeared at Bluegrass Underground, Music City Roots, John Hartford Memorial Festival, ROMP, Stagecoach, Freshgrass, and Yonder Mountain String Bands Harvest Festival. Theyre 2016 EP weaves genre-crossing compositions and heartache-infused songwriting.

Audiences across the US and UK have been drawn to their forthright songwriting, lush harmonies, musical daring, and charismatic appeal, to quote Grammy-winner Alison Brown. Growing beyond the standard verse-chorus-solo structure of traditional string bands, Twisted Pine layers the pop hooks of indie music on top of their bluegrass. Winners of the 2014 Freshgrass band competition and finalists at the 2015 Rockygrass contest, Twisted Pine has played from Greyfox to Green River to Glasgows Celtic Connections and beyond.
