Lunch with Gil Friend: Getting the Prices Right

On his arrival in England in 1930, Mahatma Gandhi was reportedly asked, "What do you think of Western civilization?" His pithy though perhaps apocryphal response: "I think it would be a very good idea." We might say the same about capitalism. The free market, of course, isn't free. It is hopelessly distorted by unpriced "externalities," special interest subsidies, and accounting systems that don't count a lot of things that really matter. Join us for a provocative discussion with an international sustainability thought leader about how to accurately account for sustainability, and how business can reduce risk and increase profitability by valuing people and planet in their financial strategies and management systems.

Gil Friend is founder, chair, and until December 2013 CEO of Natural Logic Inc, helping companies design, implement and measure profitable sustainability strategies. He is widely considered one of the founders of the sustainability movement, and was named an inaugural member of the Sustainability Hall of Fame (along with Ray Anderson, Amory Lovins, Karl-Henrik Robert and Bob Willard) by the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, acknowledging "those people that have contributed the most to the emerging field of sustainability," and "one of the 10 most influential sustainability voices in America" by The Guardian.
