'16 Handel's Messiah (Basically Baroque Concert Series)
Vesper Chorale and Vesper Chamber Orchestra revisit an audience favorite, George F. Handel's Messiah, during the Lenten season. Messiah was first performed on Good Friday, April 13th, 1742 in Dublin, Ireland. It is an oratorio, or drama in concert form, that tells the story of salvation in three parts: prophecy and birth, passion, and triumph. Presenting this piece during Lent connects the performance with the historical purpose of Messiah, telling the full story.

This concert is part of the Vesper Chorale Basically Baroque Concert Series, which seeks to provide collegiate, high school and church vocalists an educational concert of important historic repertoire, in collaboration with a semi-professional chorus and fully professional orchestra. Singers from the region will join us for this performance. This will be the group's fifth performance of Handel's Messiah.

Director Wishart Bell is quoted in the Dec. 12, 2013 South Bend Tribune saying, "I remember performances when I could feel my hair standing on end with excitement. That last chorus, 'Worthy Is the Lamb That Was Slain,' is a fitting capstone to this piece and one of my all-time favorite moments in music."

Journey with us through the grief and joy of Christ's time on earth and beyond, and transcend everyday life with this glorious music.
