ABOUT THE FILM:
Shinsengumi (2000), directed by legendary filmmaker Kon Ichikawa, is a stunning alchemy of live action, manga, and puppeteering. The samurai classic is no stranger to remakes, but Ichikawa's rendition is by far the most original. Capturing on film paper cutouts from the manga version by Hiroshi Kurogane, a legend in his own right, Ichikawa brings to life two-dimensional warriors in action-packed battle scenes on the silver screen. Seamless editing, minimal use of color, and exquisite blend of light and shadow all make for a masterpiece both entertaining and experimental. JVTA proudly presents its much anticipated international premiere.
