The bright, crisp mandolin will take center stage as four leading players reveal the versatile voice of this traditional instrument. An afternoon of workshops will be followed by an evening concert featuring the instructors.

WORKSHOPS - Each is 2 hours long and limited to twelve students.

Alan Epstein - Bluegrass Mandolin Vitamins
Time 8:30 - 10:30
The workshop will start with bluegrass chord and rhythm exercises and then Alan will jump into a few essential techniques for creating a solo on a bluegrass song.  Each student will get a great bluegrass workout and will leave with ideas, or what Alan calls "mandolin vitamins," to help them with their playing in the future.

Carlo Aonzo - Introduction to Classical Mandolin
Time 10:45 - 12:45
Carlo will begin this workshop by leading the students through a series of left hand exercises to improve their agility and interdependence between their fingers. This is a very important part of playing any style of mandolin. After that, the students will learn a classical mandolin piece in the Italian tradition.

David Surette - Celtic Mandolin Workshop
Time 1:15 - 3:15
David will teach some great jigs and reels to players of all abilities. Less experienced
players will learn the basics of the tunes, while intermediate and advanced players will work on elements of style, interpretation, accompaniment and tune development. He will feature several selections from his acclaimed Celtic mandolin CD, The Green Mandolin.

Will Patton - The Blues on Mandolin
Time 3:30 - 5:30
Will begins this workshop by looking at the evolution of the blues tonality and feeling in contrast to European music. Next we'll explore the various forms of the blues, from the Delta to modern day. We'll talk about how the blues has permeated not only pop and rock but jazz and even symphonic forms. Then we'll go to the mandolin fretboard and find the specific scales and blue notes that typify the blues, work up some licks and riffs, and practice improvising over a blues form using this vocabulary.
