Leroy Bell & His Only Friends
LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends (his band) includes Terry Morgan on bass and vocals and Davis Martin on drums and percussion. People who bought Bell's latest album, Traces, on Amazon also bought all four of his previous albums, which means that if you like Bell, you will probably like him a lot.
Bell's voice, many say, reminds them of British/Nigerian singer Seal, and the similarity is actually uncanny, almost as if they are brothers, a combination of Richie Havens and Art Garfunkel...that raspy sound going head to head with sweet tonality.
The two elements capture the sense of sadness/hopefulness that's the subject of Traces, the seemingly simple acoustic record of love gone wrong with tunes like Can You Live on Love, Just Not Good Enough,To Say Goodbye and Tears.
Bell says, "In the end I think this collection of songs took on a life of its own and I just tried to steer them in some kind of unified direction. I like to think that the title - Traces - means that no matter who you are or what you do once we're born, we can't help but leave something behind."
Bell has performed with B.B. King, Etta James, Al Green, Paolo Nutini, India.Arie, Erykah Badu, LeAnne Rimes, Michael McDonald, Idina Menzel, Colin Hay, Mavis Staples, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, Sonny Landreth, Charlie Musselwhite and Los Lobos. And he was invited by King to open for him at his Oct 15, 2007 historic return to The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.
Before he began performing, Bell teamed with Casey James and wrote songs for other performers including The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Temptations, Rita Marley and Elton John, who won a Grammy for Mama Cant Buy Me Love.
Bassist Terry Morgan has performed for 30 years while also running a successful production company, Modern Enterprises, LLC, offering such services as event design, venue management, artist booking and promotion, public relations and fund raising.
But closest to his heart, he says, is his role as bass player in LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends. Davis Martin, rhythmic powerhouse of the group, has also performed in the band Maktub since 1996. The group's second record, Khronos, was featured on NPR and the Washington Post called it 'a soul masterpiece.' Davis is the principal drum instructor at Seattle Drum School, Georgetown. He currently teaches between 40 and 50 students ranging from beginning to professional as well as special needs students.
Bell says the group feels like family, and that's what you'll experience when you come to the Blue Heron Art Center to listen!
