Cimarron (Colombia)

Cimarron is a Colombian seven-piece with spectacular, super-tight performances of joropo music and dance. Hailing from the vast Orinoco plains which stretch from Colombia into Venezuela, joropo is a fast traditional rhythm played on harp, bandola and cuatro accompanied by bass, cajon and maracas. Led by harpist Carlos Rojas and based in Colombia, Cimarrón have been experimenting with the music of their homeland for the past two decades, on the search for new musical horizons whilst staying true to their roots. The mestizo people who inhabit the llanos [plains] on the great Orinoco River are descendents of Spanish settlers, African slaves and Indigenous Indians. The word Cimarrón, meaning wild bull, is a symbol of liberty in Los Llanos.

Joan Soriano (Dominican Republic)

Born in the rural countryside of Monte Plata near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in 1972, singer/guitarist Joan Soriano is an emerging Dominican star. Soriano first crafted his own guitar as a child in the Dominican Republic, and, over time, nurtured his talent by working with and playing with some of the Dominican Republic's greatest classic merengue and bachata musicians. Soriano draws upon a variety of musical influences from Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and is a practitioner of Afro-Dominican traditional palo and gaga, preserving the styles of Dominican music. He is now the star of Adam Taub's film, "El Duque (The Duke)," a documentary about Soriano's life and career. www.myspace.com/joansorianobachata

DJ Leo Suarez will be spinning a heavy mix of Colombian and Dominican classic dance tunes.
